John 12:12–19 - What's It All About?
In the thirtieth message of our series through the Gospel of John, Pastor Richard continues into John 12:12–19, exploring the Triumphal Entry and the surprising way Jesus reveals what His Kingdom is truly all about.
As Jesus enters Jerusalem, the crowds welcome Him with palm branches and shouts of “Hosanna!” and “Blessed is the King of Israel!” They see Jesus as a victorious Messiah who will overthrow their enemies and restore earthly power to Israel. But Jesus enters the city not on a war horse, but on a humble donkey—a fulfillment of Zechariah’s prophecy that points to a King who comes in righteousness, gentleness, peace, and salvation.
This message explores one of the world’s greatest misconceptions about power: the belief that in order to have power, we must take power. Jesus turns that idea upside down. Though He possesses all authority, He does not use His power for His own benefit. Instead, He lays His life down for others, demonstrating that true power is found in humility, service, sacrifice, and love.
Pastor Richard challenges us to consider what it means to follow this kind of King in a world constantly competing for our allegiance. Jesus does not force, threaten, or manipulate us into following Him. He invites us into a new way of living—one where the first become last, where we put others before ourselves, and where surrender leads to true freedom and life.
As the religious leaders watch the crowds gather around Jesus, they recognize that their efforts to stop Him are failing: “Look how the whole world has gone after him!” This message reminds us that the church is at its strongest when it stops building its own kingdoms and begins fully living as people of God’s Kingdom.
Join us as we continue our journey through the Gospel of John — discovering what Jesus’ Kingdom is all about and learning to follow a King who did not come to conquer through power, but to bring freedom, hope, healing, and eternal life through sacrificial love.
