John 7:53–8:11 - Time to Give It Up!
In the twentieth message of our series through the Gospel of John, Pastor Richard turns our attention to one of the most well-known and emotionally powerful encounters in Scripture: Jesus and the woman caught in adultery in John 7:53-8:11.
As religious leaders drag a sinful woman before Jesus in an attempt to trap Him, this message reveals the tension between condemnation and grace, justice and mercy, truth and forgiveness. While the crowd is ready to destroy her, Jesus responds in a way that exposes hypocrisy, confronts sin, and offers the hope of transformation.
This sermon explores why the church must not avoid the topic of sin, not to shame or condemn people, but because the Gospel offers freedom from it. Pastor Richard reminds us that Scripture speaks honestly about sin because God desires restoration, healing, and new life for His people. Through the words of Jesus — “Neither do I condemn you” and “Go now and leave your life of sin” — we see both the mercy of Christ and His call to holiness.
Drawing from the cultural and historical background of this passage, this message also examines the motives of the Pharisees, the deeper meaning behind Jesus writing in the dust, and the powerful reality that the only One qualified to condemn instead chose compassion and redemption.
Through Scripture, personal challenge, and the example of Jesus, we are invited to stop hiding, stop pretending, and surrender the sin that continues to weigh us down. Whether it is pride, anger, addiction, unforgiveness, or shame, Jesus does not call us to carry it forever — He calls us into freedom.
Join us as we continue our journey through the Gospel of John, discovering the grace that frees us, the truth that transforms us, and the Savior who meets sinners with mercy and calls them into new life.
