In the twenty-first message of our series through the Gospel of John, Pastor Richard turns to one of Jesus’ most powerful declarations in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world.”

Set during the Feast of Tabernacles, this message explores the rich Old Testament imagery behind Jesus’ words. As massive lampstands illuminated Jerusalem during the celebration, they reminded Israel of the pillar of fire that guided God’s people through the wilderness—a visible sign of His presence, protection, and saving power. It is in this setting that Jesus boldly proclaims Himself to be the true Light sent into the world.

This sermon traces the connection between the wilderness wanderings in Exodus, the prophetic hope found in Zechariah, and the fulfillment of God’s promises in Christ. Pastor Richard explains how the Feast of Tabernacles pointed not only backward to God’s faithfulness in the past, but forward to the coming Kingdom of God and the arrival of the Messiah.

As Jesus declares Himself to be the Light of the World, we are reminded that His presence still leads, protects, comforts, and gives life to those who follow Him. Just as the pillar of fire guided Israel through darkness, Jesus calls His people to follow Him in faith and obedience, trusting that His light is greater than fear, anxiety, doubt, and death itself.

This message also challenges us to recognize that the light of God is not stationary. Christ calls His followers to move with Him—to step out of spiritual complacency, walk in obedience, and allow His light to transform every part of our lives.

Join us as we continue our journey through the Gospel of John — discovering Jesus as the Light of the World, the fulfillment of God’s saving presence, and the One who leads us out of darkness and into the light of life.
