We're hosting Tony Backert, former SEC Football Official, to discuss “4th Down and Life”, Saturday Aug 29th 2026, from 6-8PM at the Bridgewater Pavilion (600 Beech Fork Dr Little River)
Tony Backert has officiated high school and college baseball and football and high school basketball for 47 years. Tony retired in 2022 after his 47th season officiating football and has worked in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), Sun Belt Conference and the Southeastern Conference.
Tony will discuss the struggle and work ethic that it takes to become a sports official at the collegiate level. During this talk, he will recall the failures, obstacle and hard work that it took to become a Division I football official and the professionalism, ethics and 10 Character Traits he identifies as necessary. He will also have some of his Bowl Game rings on hand for display.
